What is ADHD? Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder of childhood, characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. He explains things in everyday language, so parents fully understand the treatment plan and feel empowered to support their child’s progress.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

ADHD symptoms must begin before age 12 for a diagnosis. However, behavior therapy can start even earlier if needed. Many children are diagnosed at school age (6-12 years) when symptoms become noticeable in class. Preschoolers (3-5 years) with hyperactivity or attention issues often try behavioral interventions first.

All children have some short attention spans and bursts of energy, but ADHD is when those behaviors are extreme and interfere with daily life. If a child’s inattentiveness or hyperactivity is much greater than peers of the same age, persists over months, and is seen in multiple settings (not just at home or school), it may be ADHD.

ADHD is usually a lifelong condition, though symptoms often lessen with age and can change (hyperactivity tends to decrease, but focus issues may remain). There’s no one-time “cure,” but many people manage ADHD effectively. Treatments (behavior strategies and/or medication) greatly improve symptoms and quality of life.

Medication is not the only approach. Especially for younger children, behavioral therapies are key. This includes parent training (teaching parents how to reward positive behavior and set clear limits) and classroom strategies (like sitting the child near the teacher).

The stimulant medications used for ADHD are well-studied and generally safe when used as prescribed. Dr. Aftab monitors heart rate, appetite, and growth regularly. Side effects like sleep problems or appetite loss can occur, but dosage can be adjusted. Non-stimulant medications are an alternative if stimulants are not suitable.
